On Friday, lunch will only be provided to those who register for the Mentorship Luncheon (see information below). All other attendees should plan to eat in one of two hotel restaurants or nearby in Evanston. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day. Appetizers will be provided at receptions on Thursday and Friday evenings, and a plated dinner will be provided on Saturday.
We have created an interactive Google Map that lists several restaurants and cafes for eating, as well as local attractions, conveniences, and transportation.

Mentorship Luncheon
This year, the conference will feature a Mentorship Luncheon organized by ARP’s postdoctoral and graduate student representatives on the afternoon of Friday, June 27. In small groups (6- 10 people), students/early career scholars (mentees) can eat lunch with mid-career/senior scholars (mentors) at a roundtable that will center on a specific theme. Example themes for roundtables include navigating the academic job market, the publishing process, or balancing academia and family life. On the registration form, you will be asked if you’d like to participate as a mentee or mentor. Mentees will be able to sign up for their specific roundtable in the weeks leading up to the conference. More information–such as the mentor names, themes, and sign-up process–will be communicated separately via email. There is no additional cost for this event and lunch will be provided.
Transportation
The conference is located in Evanston, just north of Chicago, at the Hilton Orrington/Evanston hotel. Chicago is served by two major airports: O’Hare (ORD) and Midway (MDW). O’Hare has more total flights and almost all international flights to and from Chicago. Chicago is also a major hub for Amtrak. Trains arrive at Union Station in downtown Chicago. We offer a range of transportation options from each location below:
Taxi/Uber/Lyft:
- From O’Hare Airport: 16 miles, takes 30-60 mins and typically costs $40-$60.
- From Midway Airport: 28 miles, takes 60-90 mins and typically costs $40-$60.
- From Union Station: 15 miles, takes 30-60 mins and typically costs $25-$40.
Public Transit:
- From O’Hare Airport: Take the Pulse Dempster Line Bus (runs from 4:55am – 12:15am daily). Takes 60-90 mins and costs $2.25. Get on at O’Hare MMF Bay 9 and get off at Davis CTA Station.
- From Midway Airport: Take the CTA (runs between 5:57am – 9:53am and 3:03pm-7:13pm on weekdays). Takes 90-120 mins and costs $2.50-$5. Take the CTA Orange Line (toward “Loop”) to Harold Washington Library L Station, transfer to the Purple Line (toward “Linden”), and get off at Davis CTA Station.
- From Union Station: Take the Metra (runs between 5:32am – 12:32am daily). Takes 30 mins and costs $3.75. Walk to Ogilvie Transportation Center and take the Metra UP-N Line (Waukegan) to Davis CTA Station.
If you are driving to the conference, the closest interstates to Evanston are 94 and 294. From either, exit at Dempster Street and head east. This will take you directly into Evanston. From Dempster, turn onto Sherman Avenue and bear right several blocks north onto Orrington Avenue (at Davis St). The Hotel Orrington/Evanston is on Orrington Ave. Valet parking is available for $37/night, and street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhoods.
If you are concerned about transportation options, please reach out to us. We’d be happy to share our insider knowledge and help you figure out the best option for you. The Transit App (https://transitapp.com/) is free and works reasonably well in the Chicagoland area.
