They need help on Wednesday, February 6th from about 5pm to 9pm and early Thursday. Contact Shannon Holleran at shollera@email.arizona.edu if you would like to help or want more details.
Get involved with the ARP Executive Committee! The previous graduate student representative to the ARP Executive Committee has graduated. The ARP Executive Committee is looking for a new graduate representative. Attend the ARP preconference for more information on this great opportunity for service and involvement.
ARP Young Researchers Social Event
All ARP graduate students or recent Ph.D.s are invited to the ARP Young Researchers Social Event! Join us after the ARP opening address at Brewster's for good food and good beer. Brewster's is located at 312 Central Ave SW near the conference center.
The primary aim of the ARP Graduate Student Committee Meeting was to determine a number of ways to increase graduate student representation and involvement in ARP. Jennifer Lodi-Smith, Jennifer Fayard, Josh Jackson, and Shannon Holleran met using an online instant messenger program to discuss this issue. We came up with two suggestions that we were able to immediately begin implementing.
(1) Increase awareness about the ARP Graduate Student listserve
The word is spreading about the ARP Graduate Student listserve. We are initiating/have initiated a number of plans for spreading the word such as emailing the SPSP listserve announcing the ARP Graduate Student listserve and asking faculty to forward on information to interested graduate students,
emailing graduate administrators at departments who have Personality programs asking them to let their graduate students know about the listserve, and
asking Graduate Committee members to send information on current projects and topics to the listserve. Please help us pass the word to others!
(2) Hold a graduate student social event at the next ARP meeting
As you can see from the announcement above, this plan has been fully implemented and we are excited about the first ever ARP Young Researchers Social Event - please join us!
These ideas were well received by ARP Executive committee as were two suggestions for increasing graduate student involvement in future ARP Conferences as ARP transitions to a stand-alone format.
(1) Hold a short graduate student symposium
We suggested that one way to organize a graduate student symposium to highlight some of the excellent research being conducted by ARP student researchers would be to hold a contest to select 3 graduate posters from posters submitted to ARP poster session. These selected abstracts would be invited to present 5 to 10 minute talks instead of posters. It is our hope that having a competition/award type setting for this will increase submission quantity and quality.
(2) Hold a professional development style symposium
We discussed the possibility of having, in future years, professional development style symposium organized by graduate students where issues such as publications, dissertations, job applications, etc. are discussed among graduate students and with ARP faculty.
We are excited about the increasing opportunities for graduate students as ARP continues to grow and look forward to bringing new graduate student into ARP!
Let us know if you have any other ideas by emailing the listserve!
