Grad Student and Postdoc Committee’s Report

Jennifer V. Fayard & Erik E. Noftle

Erik E. Noftle Jennifer V. Fayard We have three things to announce in our report.

First, the inaugural mentorship luncheon at the 2011 ARP meeting in Riverside was a great success! Based on survey feedback we had gathered from the graduate and postdoctoral members of ARP, we planned mentorship lunches on three topics. We were lucky enough to recruit excellent faculty mentors for the lunches: Brian Little led “Teaching a Personality Course,” Sarah Hampson led “Finding Funding for Early Career Personality Research,” and Bob Krueger led “The Academic Job Search in Personality.” When we sent emails to find out who was interested in attending, spots for the three tables filled up within 24 hours! Below are some photos of the event.

Hampson lunch Little lunch The Grad Student/Postdoc Committee will definitely plan on holding this event again in the future, and given the interest, it will probably be expanded to more tables and topics.

This brings us to our second point, which is that we want to hear about your experiences at the 2011 ARP meeting and your responses to our ideas about the upcoming conference in 2013. So we have developed a brief survey for you to complete, which is linked below.

Krueger lunch Last, but certainly not least, while we have greatly enjoyed being your fearless leaders, we have held our positions for far too long; Jenn’s on the academic job market this year, and Erik’s in his third year as a faculty member! It’s time for two of you to take the ARP Grad/Postdoc Committee to bigger and better places. We are currently soliciting nominations for those of you who would like to replace us! Please email any nominations, including self-nominations, to either Jenn at jfayard@illinois.edu or Erik at enoftle@willamette.edu by December 15.  If you nominate yourself, you should include a short blurb about yourself and/or what you would like to do as ARP graduate or postdoc rep. Also, be sure to specify which one you are running for.  We will compile a ballot of names, (first ensuring that everyone who has been nominated actually wants to run!), and conduct elections in the next few weeks. Each of the two-year terms will begin as of January 1, 2012, and continue until December 31, 2013.

There are only three simple criteria to stand for election:

1. You are an ARP member in good standing (i.e., you’re paid-up).

2. Your primary research focus is in personality.

3. You have the following current professional status:
